Hey, I just want to touch base on what Uncle Phil meant to me. He was the guy who taught me how to drive a tractor and a combine and go to my sporting events to watch me sit the bench. He was a civil servant, a fantastic mechanic, and a very good farmer. When I started working at the grain elevator, we always knew the wheat cut by McCue/Plum, because the wheat was just better than those cut by the full-time custom cutters.
I hope in heaven they have beige 1965 Chevy pickups with stick shift transmissions where you have to push the clutch all the way where it needs to hug the floorboard while simultaneously using great arm strength to switch the gear from second to third and then fourth. Maybe there will be a big yellow Wagner tractor for the fall planting and the summer fallow. Maybe one of those tractors will have a flat tire and Uncle Phil will be there to change it.
Uncle Phil was a thoughtful man in so many ways. He had to be putting up with us McCues. I'm sorry I couldn't have been a better farmhand, Uncle Phil. But you were such a profound influence in my life. RIP. Have some red licorice while you are up there.
