Obituary of Doris Daum
Doris Ruth Daum passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2007 in Rapid City South Dakota following a long battle with cancer.
Doris was born June 30, 1928 on the family farm near Pipestone, Minnesota to Paul and Gertrude (Chamberlain) Cunningham. She was the fifth of six children.
Doris attended and graduated from Pipestone High School in 1946. While in high school, Doris raised and showed the Hereford Grand Champion Steer at the Minnesota Junior Live Stock Show. She also competed in the International Livestock Show in Chicago in 1946 making it to the final group. Doris was active in 4 H throughout her growing up years.
Following high school she attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in home economics. While there she met her future husband Peter Nickolas Daum. They were married on September 22, 1951, in Pipestone, Minnesota. Following their marriage they returned to the Daum family farm and ranch near Okaton, South Dakota. Doris taught fifth and sixth grade in Murdo in the 1951-52 school year prior to starting her own family.
Doris enjoyed sewing, reading, nutrition, Bible Study, prayer, supporting missionaries, and opening their home to people who needed a home or place to stay. She loved helping people and caring for their needs in practical ways. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Through the years she was active in the Evangelical Free Church in Okaton, and the Community Bible Church in Murdo. Doris and Pete were actively involved in the Gideons International for over 40 years.
Doris is survived by two sons, Roger and wife Brenda Daum of Cozad, Nebraska, James Daum of Walworth, Wisconsin; three daughters Judy and husband Keith Moody of Colome, South Dakota, Susan and husband Wes Labrier of Union Center, South Dakota, and Linda and husband Larry Labrier of Murdo, South Dakota; twenty one grand children and twenty one great grand children; three sisters, Jean Hamm and husband Jack of Billings, Montana, Lois and husband Morris Houg of Jasper, Minnesota, and Grace Halverson of De Smet, South Dakota. She is also survived by numerous brother and sister in laws, and nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Lawrence and Charles Cunningham, and two infant grandchildren LaNelle Moody, and Chad Labrier.
Memorials are suggested to the Community Bible Church P.O. Box 206 Murdo, SD 57559 for projection equipment or to Restoration Ministries 1510 O St. Cozad, NE 69139, which was founded by Dorisâson Roger, and specializes in strengthening and healing marriages. Please make checks out to either of these ministries.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Murdo with Pastorâs Alvin Gwin and Bob Duemig, officiating. Burial will follow in the Murdo City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 21, 2007 at the Murdo Community Bible Church from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m.
