Obituary of Helen Cox
Helen Katherine O’Brien Cox was born in Kit Carson, Colorado on April 6, 1919 to Thomas and Minnie O’Brien. Helen grew up in Kit Carson on the family homestead, where they raised cattle and farmed. She attended school in Kit Carson, where she graduated from High School. Helen saw a lot of changes in her lifetime. On the date she was born, women didn’t have the right to vote. Helen attended cosmetology school in Colorado Springs, where she worked for a few years as a beautician. She married Irvin Cox in Eads, Colorado on January 8, 1949. Helen and Irvin had 4 children, Tom, Nick, Jill and Jay. The family moved to Deer Trail in 1954, where Helen lived until September, 2015, when she moved to Assisted Living in Brighton, CO.
Helen's priorities were church, family, friends.
When in her sixties, Helen took piano lessons from a close family friend Dawn (Doherty) Hix. She always looked forward to the lessons and playing the piano enriched her life.
During the last few years of her life she had many care givers. The last was Toyea Reed, whose wonderful care and kindness was greatly appreciated.
Helen enjoyed having her hair fixed by her good friend Bobbie Bell. Bobbie would pick Helen up from her house, take her to the salon, fix her hair and drive her back home.
Helen enjoyed attending church, reading, cooking, baking, sewing, playing the piano and was a Bronco’s fan.
Helen is survived by two sons, Tom and his wife Donna of Deer Trail, Jay and his wife Mindy of Brookfield, WI, and one daughter, Jill and her husband Irving Hitchcock of Erie, Colorado.
She is survived by 8 grandchildren, David and wife Renee, Michael and wife Amy, Thomas and wife Amy, Adryan and wife Allison, Angela and husband Jeff O’Day, Shelly and husband Nate Enlow, Megan Cox and Michelle Cox, and 11 great grand children Kaylee, Alison, Logan, Landree, Austin, Jocelyn, Garrett, Chantel, Amelia, Abby, and Madelynn.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Irvin Cox: her parents, Thomas and Minnie O’Brien; two brothers, Leonard O’Brien and wife Dee, and Warren and wife Charlotte O’Brien; and her son, Nick Cox.
