Obituary of Elma Schaal
Elma Helen (Gramm) Schaal lifelong Burlington, Colorado resident passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 at St. Anthonys Central Hospital in Denver, Colorado after injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. She planned to celebrate her 87 birthday in May.
Elma was born on the family homestead in Kit Carson County, on May 16, 1923 to Gottlieb and Lydia (Stutz) Gramm. She was one of five children. She was baptized and confirmed at Hope Congregational Church, Bethune, CO.
She attended Prairie View Country School in the settlement up through the eighth grade.
On March 2, 1947, Elma married Theodore Berthold Schaal at her parents home. They had two children; Geneva Louise and Clyde Joseph. Elma and Ted worked side by side farming and ranching her entire life. Elma enjoy many things including gardening, sewing and in later years enjoy making quilts. She was active in the Highway 51 Home Demonstration Club, Farm Bureau, 4-H, and was a member of the Hope Congregational Church as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader and the Missionary Ladies Aid.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Loyd Gramm.
She is survived by her husband Ted Schaal, her son Clyde Schaal and his wife Teresa of Burlington, her daughter Geneva Troutt and her husband John o f Aurora, CO, five grandchildren and their spouses Babette Tsao and her husband Freddie of Denver, CO, Justin Hudson and his wife Kari of Parker,CO, Brian Lewis and his wife Melissa of Brighton, CO, Craig Schaal and his wife Candice of Wray,CO, Braden Schaal and his finance Jenny Copple of Burlington. Elma also has six great grandsons, Porter, Payton, Terrin Lewis, Thomas and Weston Schaal and Lincoln Hudson . She is also survived by two brothers Lawrence Gramm of Bethune and Edmund Gramm and his wife Esther of Bethune, one sister Esther Corliss of Stratton, and a brother-in-law Reverend Herbert Schaal of Lodi, California.
Elma will be missed by her family, friends, and church.
