Obituary of Elsie Newsom
Elsie Mae Allison was born December 2, 1918, near Centerview, Kansas at the farm home of her parents Asul G. and Sadie (Robertson) Allison.
She attended grade school at Red Mound School and then high school at Centerview graduating in 1939. While at Centerview High School she met the love of her life, Wayne Newsom. They had never met before, although their parents’ farms were only 5 or 6 miles from each other.
Wayne and Elsie were married on February 15, 1942. Later that year, Wayne enlisted in the Navy. Elsie’s time was split between Wichita, Norman, OK and Centerview while Wayne served in the Navy. During this time their first son, Kenneth, was born. After World War II, in the spring of 1946, Wayne, Elsie and Kenneth moved to the Walks Camp Community north of Limon and began their farming and ranching business. While here their other two sons, Steve and David, were born.
Elsie’s career was being a farmer’s wife and mother to her three sons, and eventually a grandmother of five and great grandmother of seven. She loved her career and excelled at it. She could do the hard work of cooking, cleaning, truck driving, fence repair, or working cattle. She was equally adept at the loving and nurturing duties of a mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren all have special memories of spending time with her and Grandpa. The epitome of her career was the loving and dedicated care she provided, at the detriment to her own health, to her husband during the last years of his life when he was so sick and frail.
Elsie loved family gatherings, whether it was holidays, reunions, harvest time or various work projects. She loved playing cards, especially Pitch, and was an avid reader. She loved attending the sports, music and other school activities of her children and grand children. One of her proudest moments was when a great granddaughter, Elsie Elizabeth Newsom, was named after her.
After suffering a massive heart attack in 2009, she was unable to live alone and spent the remainder of her life in the Lincoln Community Care Center in Hugo. With the excellent and loving care provided while there, she was able to enjoy her final years. Elsie passed away peacefully on January 13, 2016.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; her parents, Asul and Sadie Allison: and two brothers, Glenn and Ernest Allison. She is survived by her three sons, Kenneth and his wife, Jan of Broomfield, Steve and his wife Sharon of Limon, and David and his wife Alta of Clovis, CA. She is also survived by brother, Elvin Allison and wife Joyce of Greensburg KS. Also surviving her are five grandchildren, Kevin, Kurtis, Tracy (Tim), Kyle (Anna), Miguel, seven great grandchildren, Johanna (Louie), Ben, Nick, Katy Jo, Tate, Tripp, and Ellie and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
