Limon Badgers - June 9, 2010
Posted: June 9, 2010 | Last Revised: June 9, 2010
I came to Limon as a very shy and insecure 7th grader. One of the first things I remember about this experience was going to a basketball game at the old gym in Limon. It would have been 1977 or so. I walked into the gym and it was the high school boys game. It was wall to wall people. Usually that many people would have sent me scurrying......but I was MESMERIZED! Everyone was there...from 70 yrs to 5 yrs. The air was thick and the sound system was playing "WE WILL ROCK YOU" I think! It was the biggest little gym ever! My heart could feel the vibrations of the pounding feet on the bleachers! It was Amazing! Although Dave would not have been playing in that game, probably already graduated, he was part of that legacy and continued to bring that kind of school spirit, that put Limon on the map; which ultimately means so much more than just school spirit. It's about supporting each other in life and cheering each other on over the hurdles. It's about excelling and striving to be your best no matter what the obstacle. Seeing Dave in his memorial video put him in a light that I hadn't considered; fatherhood. It compelled me to write. I will always have a connection to Limon. It did a lot for me and Dave was a part of doing that for kids. Growing up we all had our share of spats! Not liking that person or whatever but really at the end of the day we all play for the same team and we need each other. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I was only 10-12 when I first met Z, and I just remember thinking this guy was larger than life. During the next 10 years of my life, I realized my first impression was dead on the money. Z's crooked little smile and zest for everything he did is what I will always remember about him. My deepest sympathy to Ben and Shirley, Ed and Tracy and his children.

Our friendship continued via town team basketball and I also got to know Ed along the way. More recently our sons (Cameron and Aaron) competed against each other in sports so we got to see each other on a more frequent basis. Dave was always quick with a smile, hand shake and a good word. I will miss our conversations and seeing him around. Our Prayers are with his family. Mike Schlagel and Family.

Badger Nation is in mourning at the untimely and trajic loss of Coach Grimes. I spoke to David at the state track meet this year and he was so looking forward to carrying on in the tradition of Warren Mitchell to teach the student-athelete to do his or her best, whether on the track or in the classroom. But what was most important to Coach Grimes was the pure joy of a proud papa watching his own children excel, each in their unique and talented ways. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Grimes Family and especially with Camille, Cameron and Chandler. With our deepest sympathy and love. David, Kim, Claire and Libby Taussig
