First Met
Posted: June 20, 2011 | Last Revised: June 20, 2011
I just found this. This is wonderful.
I really loved Gladys. The first time I met her, I was new to the Kirkendall family. I hadn't been in the family long and was uneasy as to how they would accept a Kentucky Hillbilly. The first time we drove all the way to Kansas -- and for someone who had never been anywhere, this was like taking a trip to the moon, we stayed at Vera's and Gladys and James and the kids came all the way there just to see us. I couldn't get over that. I don't remember where they were living then, but it amazed me that they would travel all that way just to see us. She was just so nice to me. I know that from childhood, life wasn't always easy for her, so her reaching out with a smile, a hug and true warmth, made those gifts doubly valuable -- and they helped a scared little Kentucky girl feel wanted in the family.
