Remember when: - December 12, 2011
Posted: December 12, 2011 | Last Revised: December 12, 2011
Remember when:
You tried to smash a fly with the iron on the ironing board, the fly won!
You wore panties on your head so the rollers wouldn't fall out, this was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. (I have this picture some where and when I find it I'm sure I'll laugh and cry)
You had just gotten out of the shower went downstairs and later I caught you running around in just your chonies we were both surprised!
We had that talk.....and you just had to try something.....we will keep that one secret Cindy, but it was funny!
You would practice dancing in your room to the Bee Gees, Saturday Night Fever song over an over, you wanted the moves to be just right.
Thank you for allowing me to share in the two biggest days of your life, the day you married Ted and the day Henry was born, I'll never forget either.
Cindy thank you for all the special moments that we shared since joining the Torrez clan. Asalways never enough time to do or spend
with those we love, I really wish it could have been more.....so watch over us all until we meet again.......

Protector - December 11, 2011
Posted: December 11, 2011 | Last Revised: December 11, 2011
I remember a time when Henry left to play at the park, He came back upset and said that some older kids were messing with him. They took his bike and threw it several times damaging the front rim. Automatically Cindy said " everyone in the car"! I was intending on driving like I always do but she said this one was hers. We got to the park, we must have been doing 25 to 30 mph pulling into the gravel parking lot. Cindy slammed on the brakes and gravel went flying everywhere. I yelled at Cindy telling her to knock it off. She said, "Relax Ted, it's just for special effects!" She got out of the car slammed the door and went up to the biggest guy there and said "are you the SOB messing with my son? This guy was so scared I thought he was going to pee his pants. Henry came running saying "Mom thats not him". She proceeded to take care of the situation, this is how I how I remember Cindy, she was the family protector. I love and miss you Cin.

Contender
Posted: December 9, 2011 | Last Revised: December 9, 2011
Cindy was a contender and a go-getter. When playing even a game of monopoly, the war was on and 2nd place was not a consideration. Competition and being right were her strong points.

The Four of Us - December 9, 2011
Posted: December 9, 2011 | Last Revised: December 9, 2011
The Four of Us......
Two boys, two girls, as our parents would so proudly describe their brood to others with me the oldest, Jim was next, the first girl was Roseanne, and Cindy was our baby sister. Well baby sister as the years flashed past us all, I would like to share a few of the fond remembrances so that all the family and friends who did not grow up with us, who did not migrate with us to Fort Lupton, who did not then have to "fit in," when no one seemed to welcome us in this new community.
The Four of Us....knew coming from Sterling and being raised in the manner in which our parents stressed that we should be accepting of others, and yet Fort Lupton, Colorado was quite a culture shock arriving in the spring of 1968. Some thought we were migrant farm workers coming to work the fields, but many knew right away that we were different since we didn't speak a lick of Spanish other than tortilla, Chile, frijoles, etc. Our English was better than most, almost to a fault.
Suddenly we find ourselves having to be quick to get home to avoid the groups of kids who wanted to simply intimidate and pick on us. I knew right away we wouldn't be able to fight them all and prevail; sooner or later they would win if we didn't have some kind of defining moment. Heck they even threw our brother in the Fulton Ditch and really picked on him regularly. Until one day when you, Jim and Roseanne were walking home, the three of you, as you all often did together. I was behind you guys about two blocks back when someone said a group of older/bigger guys were trying to start a fight with the three of you and in particular Jim. As I get there, as the big brother knowing there were too many for us to take on, this group made the mistake of getting our baby sister Cindy angry. Everyone should know that I was afraid that we were all going to get pounded that day and instead our defining moment arrived. It happened as we all looked on, including the punks who were closest to you, when you went into that now famous super fast windmill fury of fists, and started advancing towards all of them. You made my role easier as all I needed to do was act like I could do the same thing and they had to think for a moment that perhaps "The Four of Us....," could do the same.
Our baby sister was the feisty one and the determination she demonstrated that day became our defining moment. Even though there would be others who would challenge us they had the memory or heard the story of that day and were very cautious of "The Four of Us." Our sister Cindy could take care of herself and could even see to the protection and safety of others. It was just in her nature and upbringing to do so. Yet later on, it was such a relief when you became old enough to drive and you paid for that green "tank," of a car, the Plymouth Fury. What a beast of a vehicle and man it could really move, yet in an accident with a boat that big around our sister we knew it would be safe. We were glad that the theory was never tested and you were always safe.
Did you know that another fond memory was when Darin Reed (as The Four of Us knew him as,) came up to me at a party at Mark Grajeda's house and personally thanked me for dropping him on his head at the age of seven and we all nicknamed him "Dizzy," after that? He also thanked me over and over for having such a great sister named Cindy Torrez who as the DECA president in FLHS, gave him and his band their first ever "gig," at the dance you sponsored. Dizzy told me that night was his defining moment and that he was having success at playing in his band and was able to survive as a musician, hoping to get his big break soon. Cindy you helped this kid go from a "garage band," musician struggling to make it, to being a member of a group just installed this week into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio. Dizzy Reed from Boulder, Colorado whose father was the co-owner of the Fort Lupton Market was inducted along with the other members of Guns and Roses, including Axel Rose and Slash. His first gig was his start, and he never forgot that.
My dear baby sister, we've come here to remember you and to embrace a new beginning in which we will now need to take many moments to define for those of us who remain. Although the illness that took you from us way too early pounded at you in body, mind and soul, you never lost your determined spirit at all. To the end you were the feisty baby sister who gave many defining moments, some that were needed and some that were not. Yet with all that you gave us in nearly half a century we now know it was to soon and not enough. But I will always tell my many children and grandchildren that, in a pinch, the three of us who now remain behind as siblings always knew you "had our back," no matter what, and would have always came to our aid if we had needed it. You were there for us and now The Three of Us, who remain, are here with you until we become "The Four of Us," once again.
Bye Baby Sister....I love you.
