Obituary of Dorothy Hughes
Dorothy Jane (Stokesbary) Hughes, age 89 of Burlington, Colorado and former lifelong resident of Flagler, Colorado passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. She was born June 8, 1922 in Reynolds, Nebraska the daughter of Roy and Anna (Lillie) Stokesbary. Dorothy's family moved to Flagler at a very young age and remained a lifelong resident until her health permitted her to the Grace Manor Care in Burlington, Colorado since 2009.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Bennie W. Hughes on November 13, 1937 in Burlington, Colorado. They shared nearly forty two years of marriage before Bennie passed away on May 22, 1979. To this union, ten children were born, Alice Jane, Nora Ann, Judy Mae, Ora Claude, Kenneth Ray, Dixie Cay, Bennie Elias, William Leroy, Cheryl Illene and Cora Helen.
Dorothy was a very tough, hard working, devoted, loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Her passion was her children and her life was devoted to caring and teaching them the very best she knew how. Nobody understood hard work more than Dorothy Hughes. She grew up during the depression and started raising her family at a very early age. She understood that life is tough but as long as you work hard and have faith in God that anything can be accomplished. She was known for her cooking and many stories were told of her ability to clean and cook ducks, pheasants, geese, and chickens. She could always be found canning fruits and vegetables for the winter months. Dorothy had a few hobbies that she enjoyed like reading Louis L'amour books and working on word puzzles. Dorothy's community in Flagler and her church family were always very dear to her heart. She taught her children to appreciate life in a manner they would never have realized without her guidance. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her many friends and family that she loved so much. Her spirit and love will continue to be reflected in all of their daily lives forever...
Dorothy was a proud and devoted member of the Church of Christ in Flagler, Colorado.
