Obituary of Velma Hubbell
Velma Hubbell was born Velma Mae Pickard in Fountain, CO. to Jim and Marie Pickard on September 17, 1931. She passed away September 3, 2012 in Topeka, KS.
Velma was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Vona at a young age. She was raised in Vona, Colorado with her five siblings; Harold, Leona, Louis, Kenneth and Fern.
She graduated Vona High School in 1949. On March 17, 1950 she married Ralph (RC) Hubbell.
They began their life together in and around Vona and Burlington. After the birth of their first son, they moved to Aurora, Colorado. Ralph began a brick construction business. As the family grew, they purchased a larger home in Thornton, Colorado where Velma lived until moving back to Burlington in 2010.
To this union were born two sons, Jim (Bud) and Kevin, and three daughters, Vicki, Ranae, and Janet. They raised their family in Denver and later bought a farm north of Vona where they spent many weekends enjoying the country life.
Velma kept very busy raising her five children and always had a special gift in quieting newborns with her loving touch. She was a wonderful homemaker and excellent cook. We have many special memories sitting around the kitchen table enjoying moms meals. Some of her favorite things were music, flowers, Mexican food and looking at furniture and modular homes whenever her daughters came to visit. Central City was always a fun get-away and at the age of 63, she took her first plane trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. She couldnt get over how green and beautiful it was there!
She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, her father Jim Pickard, mother Marie Pickard, father-in-law Otis Hubbell, mother-in-law Kathryn Hubbell; one sister Leona Edmunds, 6 brother-in-laws; Harold Hubbell, Norvin Larson, Ken Anderson Sr., Dwayne Johnson and Dan Hubbell; 8 sister-in-laws; Rose Pickard, Velva Pickard, Jo Ann Pickard, Ruth Hubbell, Dorothy Larson, Anita Hubbell, Peg Johnson and Lois Young.
