Obituary of Jessie Devers
Jessie Mae (Reagan) Devers age 92 of Hugo, Colorado, went to be with her Lord & Savior at 10:15 a.m. December 14, 2012. She was born December 28, 1919 to Jesse Top Carroll and Ethel Gladys (Miller) Reagan at Perryton, Texas. Her mother died shortly after giving birth and her father was electrocuted while putting out a fire when she was ten years old. She was raised by her grandparents John and Mollie Klapp of Perryton. She was the first baby born when the town of Perryton was moved closer to the
railroad.
While attending school, she met and married Virgil D. Devers, a local farm boy and they married August 24, 1940. They shared over fifty two years of marriage before Virgil passed away on March 25, 1992. They lived on the Devers home place ten miles east of Perryton, Texas and raised their six children there. A son, Kenneth Ray Devers died in infancy. They moved to Simla, Colorado in 1964 and then to Hugo,
Colorado in 1966.
Jessie was known for her cinnamon rolls which she would make every Christmas for her children and grandchildren. She made these roll up until she went into the Hugo Nursing Home in the fall of 2005.
While in Texas, she was a member of the Friendly Circle Home
Demonstration Club and a Sunday school teacher. Because Virgil was a
ribbon calf roper, it was her job to pull the ribbon and run to the finish line. When her children were little, they could never outrun her! After moving to Hugo, she became a cook at the Hugo Community Hospital and Nursing Home. She retired in 1988.
Jessie Mae was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; her infant son Kenneth Ray; two daughter-in-law, Dixie Ann Winters Devers and Nancy Dixon Devers; two son-in-laws Vic Taylor and Norman K. Banks; one grandson Justin (Festus)Taylor; and her parents and grandparents who helped raise her along with aunts and uncles whom she was raised with. Jessie was the last surviving member of Virgils immediate family.
She is survived by her five children, Sheila A. Banks of Limon,
Colorado, John G. Devers of Jourdanton, Texas, Jessie D. and Larry Meier of Limon, Colorado, Karen A. Taylor of Clayton, New Mexico and Michael W. and Roxie Devers of Hugo, Colorado; ten grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
