Obituary of Berenice Channell
Berenice (Vaughn) Channell, 91, of Hugo, CO, passed away January 10, 2013 in Aurora, CO. She was one of six daughters born to Walter Roy Vaughn and Lola Fern (Baugher) Vaughn.
Born near Selden, KS, on February 20, 1921, Berenice was raised and attended a country school near there. She then attended the Sheridan Community High School in Hoxie, KS, where she sang in the Glee Club and played violin in the orchestra and string quartet. She graduated from SCHS in 1938.
On September 17, 1939, Berenice was united in marriage to Kenneth Channell. To this union, three children were born: Carol Kay (Channell) Dexter, currently of Keystone, CO, Norman Ken Channell of WaKeeney, KS, and Gary Wayne Channell of Mulvane, KS.
While living and farming in Menlo, KS, they were members of The Menlo Methodist Church, where she worked with the youth fellowship there. She also worked many years in the Menlo schools, helping in the Food Service Department.
In 1970, Ken and Berenice moved from the farm to Denver, where they worked as hotel managers. While there, they became avid fans of the Denver Broncos , then later the Rockies. Berenice loved her sports! When they retired, they moved to Hugo, CO. Here she worked as site manager at the Hugo Senior Center for several years. Ken passed away in 2003, ending 64 years of marriage. Berenice enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and cooking.
Berenice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ken, and five sisters.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Phil Dexter, Sharon Channell, and Mary Lou Channell. Five grandchildren, Eight great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren also survive. Berenice lived a long and giving life
She will be greatly missed.
