Obituary of Dollie Matteson
Dollie Evelyn Matteson, 102, of Kim Colorado, peacefully passed away on May 30, 2014 in Burlington, Colorado.
Dollie was born in St. James, Missouri to James Benton and Minnie Mae Mitchell on March 14, 1912. She was the fourth of ten children: Ethel, Agnes, Hollis, Dollie, Denzil, Phillip, Lewis, Margaret, Henry & Isaac. She went to various country schools in Baca County Colorado. She married Charles M. (Chuck) Couchman on February 18, 1932 in Pritchett Colorado. She and Chuck accumulated many parcels of land and ended up with quite a nice sized ranch. She dearly loved the land. After Chuck passed in 1955, Dollie continued running the ranch and traveling extensively with her best friend Fay Nicholson; two single gals seeing the world! In 1969 Dollie married Delmar Matteson, who passed in 1986. Delmar and Dollie lived outside Issaquah, Washington for 10 years before returning to her beloved ranch. Delmar and Dollie lived on the ranch for a few years before moving to Cañon City (they LOVED Merlino's Belvadere restaurant). They lived in Cañon City until Del's passing when Dollie moved to La Junta. The last few years she spent "visiting" her daughter Marge in Burlington, where she kept up with current events by reading the paper every day and actively debating issues with whomever she happened to engage. Grams was never one to sit idle; how many miles of yarn has she crocheted? Dollie Matteson was definitely one of a kind and will be truly missed.
Dollie is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her two daughters Joana (Couchman) Pratt and Janie (Couchman) Brooks, son-in-law Edgar Pratt, and her grandson Rocky Brooks.
Dollie (Grams) is survived by her daughter Marge (Couchman) Powell and son-in-law Kirby of Burlington, and son-in-law Harold Brooks of Kim, Colorado. Grandchildren Spike Burrows of Pueblo West, Talana (Burrows) Davis of Burlington, Trent Brooks of Booker Texas, Shawnee (Powell) Embrey of Montrose, and Shae (Powell) Patnoe of Denver. Great-grandchildren include Chandra (Burrows) Handeland, Clayton Burrows, Michelle Peulen, KynDee (Davis) Roberson, Cedar (Davis) Dowling, Brianna & Ciara Brooks, Taya & Quentin Patnoe, Matteson & Riley Embrey. Grams was blessed with 8 great-great grandchildren as well: Cameron and Mason Handeland; Zach Peulen; Cahil, Chisum, and Cutter Roberson; Zoie Jane Brooks and McCoy Dowling.
