memories of Mr. Parton - September 21, 2014
Posted: September 22, 2014 | Last Revised: September 22, 2014
Mr. Parton was a great person, who had an impact on all of us with the good fortune to have had him as a teacher. His quiet demeanor, yet rock solid classroom discipline, made him one of the most respected teachers ever. He would usually begin his math class with some interesting tidbit of information concerning current events, or some miscellaneous fact to ponder, then get into the lesson for the day.
A few incidents I recall about Mr. Parton: We had a young man in our class who tended to be challenging for teachers when it came to discipline. As I remember it, this guy made a semi-sarcastic remark to Mr. Parton during class. Wayne told him to take his desk out to the hallway for the rest of the class period. The boy wasn't moving fast enough so Mr. Parton grabbed the desk and moved it, and the boy, out the door in short order. The rest of us marveled at Mr. Parton's strength, (and, his ability to get angry when provoked).
Another time, a couple boys got into a fight, over a girl, in the busy hallway between classes. It was a serious altercation in which both combatants ended up on the floor, tearing at each other. We bystanders (students and a couple teachers) stood back watching in dismay. When Wayne saw the fight he hustled over, jumped right in the middle of it, ended it, and walked both boys down to the principal's office . The rest of us marveled at Mr. Parton's courage and quick thinking.
On another occasion Wayne and Mr. Kimble were sponsoring a bus load of students to the state basketball tournament in Denver. One of the bus rules was that there be no food on the bus. It was announced to everyone: we all knew the rule. After the evening's games ended and we were loading up to head home, one somewhat testy character brought a hamburger on the bus for the ride home. Mr. Kimble, another of Limon High School's great teachers, reminded him of the food rule, to which the boy began to make excuses. Wayne jumped in, told him to get that sandwich off the bus post hast, and get back on the bus 'cause it was time to go home. The boy did exactly what he was told to do. The rest of us marveled at Mr. Parton's determination to enforce the rules, for everyone.
Finally, I and Eldon Ward were enjoying a moment of spontaneous levity (we were goofing off) during our math class, at a time when Mr. Parton was not in the mood to appreciate goofing off. He reprimanded us and told us to report to his class after school. We immediately lost our interest in levity, and began to dread having to go see him after school. We were basically studious guys who rarely (if ever) got into trouble. But, we did as we were told, and went straight to Mr. Parton's room when the final bell rang. As soon as we stepped into his classroom he said, "Thanks for coming in fellas. You can go now." I think it was his way of saying, "I may have overreacted boys. It was just one of those days." We marveled at his ability to look at a person's motives and judge them accordingly.
Mr. Parton was a man of quiet strength and compassion, and a friend of our family for many decades. Our community has lost a fine man, yet his memory will be a source of encouragement to all who knew him. He was as good a teacher as ever walked the halls of Limon Public Schools. a

Jane, Shawn and Kendell,
I am so sorry for your loss as it is everyone's loss. Wayne touched so many lives over the years in and out of the classroom. I remember many times that Wayne and Jane would take me to watch away football or basketball games. Without this generosity, I would have likely stayed home. I am very grateful and appreciative for the kindness that he showed me when I would have questions on my homework and helped me understand math in a way that was foreign to me. I remember many Saturday afternoons, coming to the house and he would be vacuuming and doing house work with a smile on his face. I have many fond memories of Wayne that will be treasured forever. May God bless you and your family and most of all the memories of your beloved husband and father.

I was a student of Mr. Parton's in elementary school. I believe he taught an advanced Math class when I was in 5th grade where I came in early to learn more advanced Math. I really enjoyed that class. He brought Math alive to me. I developed a love of the subject from that class and carried that with me all through school. I still love Math and prefer this subject to any other.. He was a gifted teacher.
