Obituary of Michael Liggett
Michael Lance Liggett, age 58, of Limon, CO passed Sunday, September 28, 2014 in Denver, CO.
Mike was born June 9, 1956 in Limon to parents Kenneth S. and Gloria (Townsend) Liggett. Mike grew up in Limon, graduating from Limon High School with the class of 1974. He then went on to attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Mike played baseball and ran track for the Horned Frogs before graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Business. While attending TCU, Mike was the President of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Mike then obtained his Masters in Banking Degree from Colorado University School of Banking in 1982.
On June 21, 1986, Mike married Brenda Ververs in Woodland Park, CO. The couple made their home in Limon.
Mike enjoyed his career in the banking industry, joining his father, Kenneth, as a fourth generation banker at First National Bank in 1981. He also worked at the First National Insurance Agency until the mid 1990s. Mike retired from the bank in 2007 and then became a full time rancher.
Mike served his community as Mayor of Limon from 1992 to 1996. Before becoming Mayor, he served on the Limon Town Council from 1986 to 1990 and was also a Limon Rotary Club Member.
Through the years, Mike sat on various bank and community boards. Included were: The Bankers Board at First National Bank of Limon, Big Sandy Holding Company, Strategic Bank Corporation, Bankers Bank of the West, Horizon Bank as well as the President of Your Community Foundation.
Another passion of Mikes was coaching. He began coaching football in 1999 and baseball in 2000 and continued to coach alongside longtime friends until his death.
Mike was a member of the Methodist Church in Limon. His hobbies included golf, team roping, fishing, riding bikes, weight lifting, snow and water skiing and spending time with family. He became a licensed pilot in 1981.
Mike was proceeded in death by his father, Kenneth Liggett.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Liggett of Limon; three sons, Michael Liggett of Los Angeles, CA, Tyson (Justine) Liggett of Limon and Gavin Liggett of Limon; two daughters, Whitney Liggett of Dallas ,TX and Laci Liggett of Denver; mother, Gloria Liggett of Limon; mother and father in law, Keith (Glenna) Ververs of Surprise, AZ; sister, Kim(Dave) Taussig of Limon; one grandchild on the way and a host of extended family members, brother in laws, sister in laws, nieces, nephews and close friends.
