Obituary of Doris Akers Cox
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris Akers Cox passed from this life on January 19, 2023 in Boise, Idaho, following several years of poor health.
Doris Mildred Campbell was born to Carl and Mildred Berger Campbell in Limon, Colorado on March 3, 1930. Her early years were spent with her parents, grandmother, older brother John and younger brother Louis on the family farm, which had been homesteaded by her grandfather in 1906. She went to small country schools until attending Limon High School, from which she graduated in 1947.
Employment at Mountain View Electric came after high school, followed by marriage in 1948 to Paul Akers, whose parents had also homesteaded in the Limon area.
The 1950’s, 60’s, and early 70’s were spent raising her family, consisting of daughters Mary and Cathy and son John. She was actively involved in their school activities as well as teaching Sunday school classes at the First Baptist church, which she and Paul had joined in 1949.
Doris also kept the books for her husband’s business, the Limon Enco/Exxon gas station. Once all three children were in school she went back to work outside the home as a bookkeeper, retiring after nearly 20 years from Auto Service in 1984.
Doris and Paul Akers were able to enjoy some travel during the early years of retirement but were always happy to return to their home in Limon. Doris continued to call Limon home after Paul’s death in 1986. She found a travel companion in Helen Bell, her daughter Cathy’s mother-in-law, and made trips to England, Australia and Israel as well as many others made to spend time with her children and to get to know her grandchildren.
With marriage in 1998 to Paul Cox, who had also been widowed, her family expanded with the addition of four children, Donna, Doug, Paula and Jim, eleven grandchildren and the beginning of what was to become a most impressive group of great-grandchildren.
For the next 16 years Doris and Paul Cox lived in Limon where their home was always open and welcoming to extended family and friends. They were active in the Hi-Plains Baptist Church, the Limon Heritage Society and the local senior center.
In 2014 Doris and Paul moved to Grace Assisted Living in Boise, Idaho in order to be closer to daughters Mary and Paula. Paul proceeded Doris in death in March of 2022.
Doris will be missed by seven children and their spouses, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces, nephews and other younger family members in whose lives she always took an interest.
Doris wrote that “children and grandchildren were a source of joy, love of her savior filled her life with peace and happiness” and that she “felt blessed to live upon this earth at this particular time - going from horse and buggy era into an amazing computer age.”
A memorial service will be held in Limon at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either, Hi-Plains Baptist church, 1001 H Avenue, Limon, Colorado 80828, or Limon Heritage Society, P.O. Box 341, Limon, Colorado, 80828.
