Bernice Kunau

Obituary of Bernice M. Kunau

Berniece M. Kunau was born on November 15, 1925 to Robert “Curt” and Edna (Lee) Humphrey in Berlin, Oklahoma.  Curt and Edna lived at Campo, Colorado, but Berniece was born in Oklahoma while the family was there for cotton harvest. When Berniece was 14, they moved to Palmer Lake, Colorado.  As a young girl, Berniece told of helping her father put up hay with a pitchfork on the ranch near Palmer Lake.  After graduating from Lewis High School in Monument she got a job running the elevator in Hibbard’s Department Store in Colorado Springs.  She married Harvey D Kunau on January 23, 1948 and moved to a farm south of Rush, Colorado.  Five children were born to this union – Janice (Clyde) Chess, Dwayne Kunau, Lavern “Red” (Doris) Kunau, Jerry Kunau, and Timothy “Tim” (Sandy) Kunau.  Besides managing the work of a Farmer/Well Driller’s wife and mother of 5, she found time to run a mail route.  She delivered mail on the south Rush route for 30 years.  This was a job she thoroughly enjoyed, and was good at.  She and Harvey were charter members of Kendrick Bible Church.  She is survived by all 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was able to live independently until the end of life; she lived on the farm she and Harvey put together.  She then passed quickly and peacefully into the presence of her Lord.  She was 94.  Well done, Mom! Thank you Vicky Wright for providing assistance and companionship 3 days per week.   Memorial donations may be made to Kendrick Bible Church.
