Lewis Florey

Obituary of Lewis N Florey

Lewis Nathan Florey was born to Kenneth Harold (Pete) Florey and Verna Bryan Florey on September 24, 1931 in Bartlett, Colorado in Baca County.  He went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 20, 2019 at The Living Center at Sunny Vista in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Lewis spent his young life in Baca County near the Kansas border on a farm.  At the age of 6 the family moved to the state of Washington where he began school.  Then they moved back to Baca County where Lewis attended Konantz school.   The family moved several times before settling on a farm east of Elbert.

Lewis attended high school in Peyton where he boarded with a family during the week and graduated in 1949. He then attended Parks School of Business in Denver where he earned a business degree.  When he was a senior in high school he noticed a freshman girl who was the sister of one of his classmates.  He fell in love with Lorene Cole and the couple were married June 10, 1951.  They lived east of Elbert just down the hill from his parents when their first daughter Linda was born in August of 1952.  Soon after Lewis went to work in Simla for the government agency, Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service.  Then a couple years later a son, Kenneth Edwin was born on October 3, 1954.  Lewis continued to commute to Simla every day, then come home to milk cows and do other chores.  On January 24, 1957 Cindy Louise was born.  Then a few years later, Tammy Lavina joined the family on December 30, 1962.

In 1965 the family moved to Simla where Lewis continued to work for ASCS and the kids attended Simla School.  Lewis spent many years with the ASCS.  He supported his children in all their activities and was a dedicated Simla sports fan even through some of his grandchildren.  At age 55 he retired from ASCS and he and Lorene moved back to Elbert where he continued ranching full time.

In 1996 Lorene became ill and was diagnosed with cancer.  Lorene passed away in December 1996.

On June 11, 1997 Lewis married Liddie Ashcraft from Matheson.  She too had lost her husband Glen to cancer two years prior.  They have enjoyed 22 years together, traveling to many places, and enjoying friends.  They moved to Canon City where they found a great church family to worship with.  Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Verna Florey, sister, Louise (Florey) Ross, his wife, Lorene and great grandson, Wesley Stephen Maranville.

He is survived by wife, Liddie; daughter Linda (Jack) Maranville of Matheson, CO; son, Kenny (Jodi) Florey of Simla, CO; daughter, Cindy (Bill) Stroh of Jordan, Mt.;   and daughter, Tammy (Greg) Mitchell of Simla, CO.  Also surviving Lewis are grandchildren, Chad (Cindy)Maranville; Scott (Sarah) Maranville; Barry (Mandy) Maranville; Joshua (Heidi) Stroh; Jacob (Joy) Stroh; Kimmi Florey; Jennifer Florey; Jeff (Lucy) Florey; Matthew (Stacie) Herman; Aimee (Mike) Ludlum; Chanse (fiance’ Jordan) Mitchell; Kenzi (Matt) Brown; and Cole Mitchell.  He has 23 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson Also surviving are step children Keith (Percy) Ashcraft; Kim Ashcraft; step grandchildren Peyton Ashcraft; Dakota (Nick) Vaughn; Kaeli Hottinger (Dave) and Austin Ashcraft; and 2 step great grandchildren.  Also surviving is one niece, Carol Arleen (Jack) Anderson of Hemet, CA.

Lewis loved Jesus Christ and made sure his children were in church to learn of Jesus’ love. Even when the weather was too bad for the preacher to come to Fondis from Denver, he and Lorene made sure they had church at home.

Liddie, thank you for loving our Dad and for caring for his needs.  We know the past 4 years have been very difficult and we love and appreciate you.
