Obituary of Nola Mangus
I was born March 6, 1925 to Arthur and Nellie Brooks and they named me Nola Faye Brooks. I am the second child of three and had an older brother named Elmer and a younger sister, Helen. We went to grade school in a country school in Yuma County 2 miles north from home. We walked to and from school all the time. Very rarely did we ever get any kind of ride.
When old enough, I was in 4-H clubs and did quite well with my projects. I quit 4-H when I started to high school in the fall of 1939.
I came to high school in Burlington and stayed with my grandparents C.J. and Myrtle Buchanan the first two years of high school and then worked for my board and room my third year. I batched my senior year. I did a number of jobs while in high school like doing ironing and worked in the county clerks office after school on Saturdays. I also did a lot of baby sitting and running errands for some older ladies. I graduated from high school in 1943.
After graduation I worked for the Co-op elevator in Kanorado. I then came to Burlington and worked in the J.C. Penny store for a short time before going to work for the National Farm and Loan Association now called Federal Land Bank. I worked there for 2 ½ years until a lady from another office that closed was transferred here and I was let go.
On February 8th, 1945 I was married to Glenn E. Mangus and we lived with his parents. This is where our first son Merle was born. We then moved in Kanorado into the big Mangus house for a couple of years and then moved south of the folks. This is where our second son Jerry was born. We then moved west a mile on the old Ralph Schmidt place and this is where our daughter Rita was born. When she was just a few months old we moved south of Ruleton, KS and Glenn worked for Mas Alderman until spring of 1955 when we moved to what is now the Hartman Farm. In September of 1955 I went to work for the ASCS office. In the spring of 1957 we moved to Senter street in Burlington. In 1958 we purchased our home from the estate of my Grandparents C.J. and Myrtle Buchanan. This is where our son Kenny was born.
Over the years I was very active in the Green Valley Home Demonstration Club, was den mother for several years, and a 4-H leader for four years. I always took a very active part in school activities while my kids were in school. I also enjoyed all the activities of the grandchildren and visiting with people in nursing homes and all the shut-ins.
I retired from the ASCS office in November 1981 and went to work for Winfrey and County December 1, 1981.
I always went to the First Christian Church since coming to Burlington for high school in May of 1939. I was baptized in 1977 and have been very active in the church ever since.
Glenn passed away February 21st, 1976 after 31 years and raising four wonderful children. On October 4th, 1978 I married Ervin (Kack) Hoppe. We learned to square dance and belonged to 3 clubs for some time which we enjoyed very much. During our marriage we did a lot of traveling which we thoroughly enjoyed. Ervin transferred his membership into the First Christian Church after we married and he to was very active in the church. Ervin passed away October 26th, 1996.
My hobbies have always been sewing and making things for the children, grandchildren and myself. I have made a number of bed quilts, and crib quilts, wall hangings and a number of other craft items. I have always had time to mend and patch for most anyone. I was a part of Carousel Quilters and the Red Hat Ladies, the Garden Club and TOPS.
In March of 2010 I married Harold Pickard and we had a great honeymoon trip to Alaska. Harold and I did a lot of traveling around the county and to see our families for a few years until he passed away in March of 2014.
I was preceded in death by my parents Arthur and Nellie Brooks, my brother Elmer Hawpe, brother-in-law George Weber and husband Glenn Mangus, husband Ervin (Kack) Hoppe, husband Harold Pickard, and son Merle Mangus.
Thanks a lot to all my wonderful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for all you have done for me throughout the years. My love to all.
