Harry Thompson

Obituary of Harry C Thompson

Harry Carlton Thompson was born June 22, 1937 in Limon, CO to parents Harry Clifford and Pearl Gladys Thompson at their homestead in the Walks Camp Community.  A strong Norwegian family, they enjoyed all things Norwegian (lutefisk, lefse, and uff-da when needed).  Harry was one of 6 children and as a boy he enjoyed building toys with his brother Lee from scrap parts around the farm.  He was taught in a one room school house from first grade to fourth grade and was the only student in his class for a time.  Beginning in the 5th grade, he attended Limon Public schools where he graduated.  Afterwards, he attended CSU in Fort Collins where he selected courses related to agriculture.  He later attended a barber school in Denver and then returned to the Limon area to share his talent.  The barber chair he used is now in the Limon Heritage Museum.

On November 20, 1963 Harry and Shirley Farnsworth of Burlington were married.  His new family included Shirley and children Debra and Mark.  Harry Kurtis (Kurt) was born in December of 1965. In 1967, Shirley and Harry, along with the help of many close friends, completed construction on their new home located 20 miles north of Limon.  Harry and Lee with the support of their families partnered to create Thompson Brothers.  They were involved in many business ventures related to agriculture and the community.

Harry loved attending livestock sales and was a buyer for other ranchers. In the early 1980’s, Harry’s business background and good judge of character earned him a position on the Board of Directors for the First National Bank of Hugo, which he enjoyed for over 30 years.

Harry spent countless hours driving the countryside admiring the land, cattle and visiting with his many friends and business partners.  Most of all he loved Shirley and their many adventures together.  They were avid travelers and made a very graceful couple on the dance floor.

Harry enjoyed contributing to the community in many ways.  He could be seen at Limon Badger sporting events and was especially proud of supporting his grandchildren.  Harry generously donated to many local causes and organizations.  He passionately supported developing the trades and agricultural business careers.  From this passion the Harry and Shirley Thompson Memorial Scholarship was created.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife Shirley (Andrews), his parents, Clifford and Pearl (Strand), sister Donna and Anita, and brother Allen.  He is survived by sister Barbara Robb, brother Lee Thompson, children Debra Olesen, Mark Farnsworth, Kurt Thompson, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
