Obituary of Harriet J. Hahn

Harriet June Hahn was born June 16, 1927 in Wichita, Kansas to Harry Conner and Kathryn Sumners Conner. She lived in Clayton, Kansas until the age of three, when her family moved to Aurora, Colorado, where her father and her Uncle Luther bought the Fitzsimmons Bus Company. Her Sister Alberta May was born in May of 1931. In 1934, the family moved to Denver, and Harriet graduated from East High School in 1944. While in high school, she was a member of the Seraph Sisters, a senior girls’ service society, and Job’s Daughters. She graduated from the University of Denver in 1948 with a degree in Education and Social Sciences. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, the PanHellenic Council, Mentors, and Parakeets. After graduation, Harriet taught third grade in the Denver Public Schools for two years. In August of 1950, she married Max Hahn and moved to Burlington. She began teaching in the Burlington schools in September of 1950, teaching second grade, third grade, and a 3/4 split. She taught and substituted until 2000, and was a reading tutor until 2004. She belonged to BEA, CEA, and NEA. Harriet was a member of Modern Homemakers, Order of the Eastern Star, Burlington Garden Club, Quo Vadis, PEO, Burlington Woman’s Club, Investors’ Club, and several bridge clubs. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Brownie Leader, and Clerk of the Course for swimming meets. An avid reader, Harriet logged over 100+ books per year. She was a talented seamstress and craft-maker, a foodie, passionate about her yard, gardening and trees, a sharp-as-a-tack bridge player, and she loved to travel and attend plays. A lifelong learner, she took innumerable classes from Adams State College and the University of Northern Colorado on such diverse topics as computers, college algebra, and every aspect of teaching. Harriet is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Kathryn, her husband, Max, and her sister Alberta. She is survived by her children David and Mary Lee, her grandchildren Max and Emma, her nieces Susan and Karen, and a myriad of close friends.
