A Grateful Tribute - July 4, 2015
Posted: July 4, 2015 | Last Revised: July 4, 2015
My aunt, Phyllis Mae, was the grown-up who always had time to play with us as children. She always had time for a game of Monopoly, to rock a baby, to read to a toddler.
She was the keeper of the names and dates and births of her nephews, nieces, even as they numbered into the dozens.
I will remember the lessons she taught us--to have compassion, patience, and gratitude for our blessings. She taught what it means to belong to a family, to be accepted for no other reason than being one of us. She taught about caring for those who need our help. She taught that everyone has something to give and a place in the river of life.
Phyllis Mae showed me what grace looks like in the opportunities she presented to her community and family members to make a place for her and to appreciate what she could contribute.
Rest in peace, Phyllis Mae and thank you for the gifts you gave us.
