Obituary of Waunita Yarnell

Waunita D. Yarnell was born on December 2, 1909 in Kit Carson, County to Adrian and Emma Belle (Elliot) Burd and died on June 25, 2006 in Greeley, CO. Waunita grew up in Kit Carson County, attending school at Kanorado, Kansas graduating from Kanorado High School on May 21, 1927, as valedictorian. She married Wilber Hines on May 22, 1927 and then married George Yarnell on October 27, 1939.
Waunita was born in Kit Carson County Colorado and then moved to Oklahoma via horse and wagon. After a couple of years the Burd family returned in the wagon to the Kanorado area. She lived in the Burlington area until 1949. Waunita and her family then moved to the Kiowa, Colorado area to a ranch then a few years later operated a cafe in Kiowa. After all the children were raised and gone she went to work for the Elbert County Treasure and Assessor's office for over 13 years. She then worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Simla for a few years. Waunita also served as senior citizen representative on the Human Service Board and then served on the Senior Services Board in Region V. Waunita was a member of the Kiowa Creek Community Church, Presbyterian, Ladies Aid, the Country Home Demonstration Club, The Elbert County Cowbelles, and the Elbert County Historical Society. She also was a 4-H club leader for five years. Waunita enjoyed gardening, crafts and fancy work, home canning and cooking for her large family and extended family.
Waunita was preceded in death by her parents, husband; George Yarnell, five sisters, four brothers, one beloved daughter, and daughter-in-law Sherry Hines.
Waunita leaves behind seven sons; Wilbur Hines of Fort Lupton, Gerald and wife Irene Hines of Elco, Nevada, Mickey and wife Gerri Hines of Huson, Montana, Leland and wife Laurel of Greeley, Colorado, Donald and wife Romona Yarnell of Greeley, Colorado, Larry and wife Ellen Yarnell of Morrison, Colorado and George and wife Glenda Yarnell of Ramah, Colorado who will miss her greatly. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Waunita were held Friday, June 30, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. at the Kiowa Creek Community Church, Presbyterian in Kiowa, CO. Interment followed at the Elizabeth Cemetery.
