Wilbur Haeseker, age 100, passed away Wednesday May 23, 2007 at the Tender Care Village in Flagler, Colorado. Wilbur was born May 22, 1907, in Elk Creek, Nebraska, to Charles and Amelia Blume Haeseker. He was baptized in infancy, confirmed in his faith as a youth and attended parochial school grades 1 through 8 at St Peterâs Lutheran Church, a country church located near the family home.
In 1920 Wilbur, his parents, and brother Norman moved from Nebraska to the Flagler area. The family rented a farmhouse southwest of Flagler for a year before they moved to the familyâs eventual home northwest of Flagler in 1921.
Wilbur was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Flagler for many years. He loved music and as a young man sang tenor in a menâs quartet at various church services. He held nearly every elected office in the church including elder, trustee, and once served as the financial secretary for 17 years in a row. He also served several terms as a board member of the Flagler Farmerâs Co-op.
Wilbur married Amanda Malchow in Beatrice, Nebraska on May 8, 1955. They settled into life on the farm and enjoyed social time spent with the Sew and Such Club and several church social groups. For many years, Wilbur and Amanda delivered farm fresh eggs to friends and neighbors in Flagler and the surrounding area. Amandaâs health began failing in the 1980âs and she passed away July 10, 1981.
Wilburâs retirement plan was to continue living and working on his farm where he could watch the daily progress of his crops and animals. With the assistance of his friends and good neighbors Becky and Garrett Mitchek, he was able to stay in his home until April 2006 when he moved to the Tender Care Village in Flagler.
Survivors include his nephews Robert Haeseker of El Cajon, California, Donald Haeseker of DeKalb, Illinois and their families; nieces Judith Foltz of Denver, Carolyn Bening of Claremore, Oklahoma and their families; sister-in-law Viola Haeseker of Fort Morgan, sister-in-law Wilma Carstens and her husband Alfred of Denver; several cousins; neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, and his parents.
Services for Wilbur were held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday May 29, 2007 at the Love Funeral Home in Limon. Interment followed at the Flagler Cemetery after the service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Flagler Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 35 Flagler, Colorado 80815.
