The best friend I ever had has died. It would take me 10 pages to express what I feel, but suffice it to say, if it werent for Bette, I never would of had the success I have had. Of all the radio and television stations I have managed, of all the people and coworkers it was my privilege to know, Bette stood alone at the top.
Until we meet again above, Bette will always be in my heart along with Jim and George and Dave and Earl and Henry and all my "Burlington Buddies".

Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado Website
At the attached link, you will be able to review the brief biography and the video that was shared at the time of Bette Bailly's induction into the Broadcast Professionals' Hall of Fame in 2003. There was a dinner and program held in Denver for the awardees that year. This website contains all of the honorees over the past 15 years or so, and is interesting to see. Click on the left margin to view those tributes to the broadcasters you may know and remember! Many of the older TV and radio personalities around the state of Colorado that will be familiar to you will be on this site.
General Link http://www.broadcastprofessionals.org/halloffame.html
There is also an "In Memoriam" page which has additional information on the Professionals who have passed away, and of course, Bette will have her own section here, soon.

For additional information about KNAB and it's inception, run your mouse up the same page as the direct link to Bailly and you will see an entry for E.G. Beehler. Alternatively, go to the year 2005 on the left side of the first link and you will see his name listed. Click on his name. Al Ross started KNAB in 1967, and the radio engineer who was responsible for beginning the station was Elmer Beehler. They were my father and grand father, respectively. At the time KNAB was started, the Federal Communications Commission required that a licensed radio engineer be associated with every station. My father owned and managed stations but he was not a licensed engineer.
My cousin and I submitted our Grandfather Beehler's name to the committee and Bette was an avid supporter for him to be inducted that year. She enjoyed working with him, and remained friends with him until his death in 1985.
On a personal level, I met Bette when I was 13, when my father hired her as the radio engineer for his station in Burlington. My grandfather was willing to help him build it and get it on the air, but was not interested in moving to Burlington (he and my grandmother had lived in Sterling since the mid 1930s). He also preferred to stay retired (he was in his mid 70s in 1967). Bette was a mentor of mine, always encouraging me to achieve my career dreams in what was then a male-dominated field, and she was one of my biggest cheerleaders. Even though I moved out of state after graduating from CU-Boulder, I have stayed in contact with Bette for the rest of my life, and if I was in Colorado visiting friends and relatives, I visited her in Burlington every time I was able to. I will miss her tremendously, and will miss our phone conversations we had during the times when I was not able to see her. Rest in Peace, Bette.

Bette granted me my "bliss" - October 15, 2015
Posted: October 15, 2015 | Last Revised: October 15, 2015
She allowed me to fulfill my dream of working in radio but it wasnt easy for me to get in her good graces. I remember walking into her corner office and telling her I would be willing to do whatever she asked of me. My first radio "experience" involved sweeping the transmitter room, blowing out the air filters monthly, cleaning the bathrooms, vacuum the lobby and offices. Then I was allowed to run the reel to reel tapes of the Sunday morning religious programming. 7a to 1p shift gave me about 2 hours of airtime. I worked at it and tried to get better.
When I graduated high school Bette hired me full time for the summer and learned I had a "talent" for writing and recording commercials, I have numerous recollections of Bette returning from a sales call and ringing me on the intercom telling me to get down to her office. Often she would hand me a sales order that was pretty much blank. She would say "youve been going to this store your entire life. This week they have a special on "blank". Hop to it." I did until I left for college in the fall. Then, whenever I had a break (I went to to a college on a quarter rather than a semester system so breaks were usually several weeks) she always had work for me. As I learned more and more she had me train the "new recruits" as she called them. This is how I met a TON of great folks. I truly believe Bette loved us all in her own way.
My final stint there was as Operations Manager in the late 80s I believe. I had my BA in communications and had left a master control job at KDVR in Denver. TV was OK but radio was my bliss. I loved it and Bette pretty much let Mark Thompson (Sales Director and morning show) and me handle the day to day and she concentrated on selling and her community work. She did tons of stuff for the Chamber of Commerce, the Fair board, St. Catherines church, and more.
I wrote my honors thesis at the University of Denver about women in the media and the heart of the thesis was my experiences with Bette and how much I admired her, how much she taught me. She could be really tough on some people but could turn around and be the sweetest person you ever saw. She loved kids and announced various 4H events at the Kit Carson County Fair for years.
Burlington Colorado is indeed very lucky to have had Bette Bailly as a resident and I am very thankful she was a part of my life. RIP boss.
