Obituary of Margaret Kontour
Margaret Wilhelmina Kontour, 86, of Strasburg, CO passed away on January 12, 2008.
Margaret was born in Thompson, NE on May 27, 1921 to Anton and Marie Boerner. She was raised by her father with the assistance of her older sisters and brothers when her mother passed away when she was one and one half years old.
The Boerner family moved to Deer Trail, CO in the winter of 1929. The conductor forgot to stop the train on time, so the Boerners had to walk a mile in the snow back to the depot. Father Anton purchased a farm southeast of Deer Trail where he raised beef and hogs and had a chicken and egg farm. Margaret attended Deer Trail public school through the eighth grade. She didnât attend high school because her father disallowed this.
Margaret met Matt Kontour at a country dance near Agate and after a short courtship they were married in Littleton, CO on November 18, 1939. To this union were born five children; Melvin, Lawrence, Jeannette, Steven & Edward.
Matt & Margaret started out ranching southeast of Brush, CO; west of Cedar Point. They moved to Oregon for two years in the late 1940âs then moved back to Deer Trail. They then moved to Hugo, CO where they ran two gas stations and the old Bradley Motel. Matt tried farming again but the drought of the 50âs took his money. They moved back to the Deer Trail/Agate area where Matt worked various jobs and farmed on the side. Margaret was the cook for the Agate school for twenty-five years then worked at the Strasburg convenience store for another fifteen years. Matt & Margaret moved to Strasburg in 1989 to be closer to her work.
Matt passed away in 1992 after fifty-two years of marriage to Margaret. She is also preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters.
Margaret is survived by her children; Melvin & Margaret of Wheatland, WY; Lawrence & Ruella of Crawford, CO; Jeannette & Chester Wallace of Agate, CO; Steve & MaryAnn of Augusta, KS and Ed & Sharla of Byers, CO; 12 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law Jim Kontour of Deer Trail, CO; sisters-in-law Margaret & Mildred of Deer Trail, CO; Norma Kontour of Loch Buie and several nieces and nephews.
