Mabel Beatrice Gordon Grokett was born on June 11, 1915, at Keysor, Colorado to Joseph Randolph and Daisy Mae (Knox) Gordon. She lived in Elbert County on a farm south of Simla and then in Simla. She attended school at Keysor, Colorado and graduated out of the 8th grade in the late 1920âs. Mabel was a caregiver at an early age, when at the age of 13, her mother died from a long illness in 1928. She was taught the benefits of housekeeping and tending to chores before the passing of her of her mother, which in turn benefited Mabel all the days of her life.
Mabel married Thomas (Bus) Grokett on September 29, 1932 in the church of Keysor. Two children were born to this union; Donald and twin sister Donna, who died at birth. The family resided in Elbert County, where Mabel was a devoted wife and mother, while Bus worked on the farm and then for Elbert County. Mabel loved using her hands, mostly in making her pretty crocheted items. What a lovely relent this wonderful women possessed. In the early 1980âs for health reasons Mabel and Bus moved to Limon. In November of 1988 Bus passed away. Mabel moved to the Hitchcock Home in Hugo in 1991 due to her declining health. She so enjoyed her life there and continued to work her hands, even when arthritis tried to make things difficult. As Mabelâs health declined she then moved to the Lincoln Community Nursing Home in January of 1995 where she resided until her death on June 05, 2008.
