Obituary of Martin Buol

Martin Andrew Buol went home to be with the Lord on October 29, 2008 at Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington.
Martin was born July 30, 1921 in Burlington, Colorado to John & Anna Buol on their farmstead north of Burlington. He attended grade school and graduated from high school in Burlington in 1939. He also attended CSU at Fort Collins for three years, where he studied engineering and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He then returned home to work on the family farm until he was called to the Army in April, 1944. After basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas, he joined the 4th Platoon Co. B 271st Inf. 69th Div. and went overseas in November of 1944 and entered the front lines of World War II in February, 1945. After the European Theatre Operations ended, he was transferred to Germany until his honorable discharge in June, 1946. His most memorable experience was the Battle of the Monument in Leipzig, Germany.
Upon returning to Burlington after the War, he entered the farming profession with his dad, John and brothers, Kermit and Russell. He continued farming and cattle feeding with Kermit until 1992.
Martin married Rogene Merwin in February 13, 1944. To this union was born a son, Terry Lee and a daughter, Shelley Ann.
Martin was a member of the Burlington Rotary Club, being President from 1956-1957. He is a life member of the VFW and a past president. He was a member of the district fire board for 17 years, helping organize the Rural Fire Department, served on the school board, was appointed by Governor Love in 1966 to the Colorado State Water Board, implementing regulations for irrigating out of the Ogallala Aquifer in Eastern Colorado, was instrumental in organizing the Booster Club and was the first Chairman and has been a supporter of scouting.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was chairman of the official board.
His hobbies included golf, bowling, fishing, traveling, cards (particularly bridge and poker) and singing. He was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed it right up until his health would not allow him to play anymore. Martin had a passion for singing and would sing to people every chance he could. His favorite song that he most liked to sing to people was âIn the Garden.â?
Martin and Rogene farmed in this area until they semi-retired in Cape Coral, Florida in the late 1970âs. They built their house in 1988 and moved there permanently in early 1990âs. Martin and Rogene were very active in the Palmetto Pines Country Club and formed many lasting friendships. In June 2005, they returned to Burlington to be closer to family. Rogene passed away on September 30, 2005.
On January 5, 2008, Martin married June Redman and they enjoyed each other for 10 months at the Legacy in Burlington.
Preceding Martin in death were his parents, his wife, Rogene, his brothers Russell and Kermit and grandson, Juan Buol.
Martin is survived by his wife June of Burlington; his son Terry and wife Judi of Norfolk, Nebraska; his daughter Shelley and husband Dale Hansen of Burlington; six grandchildren, Mike Buol of Beatrice, Nebraska, Tony Buol and wife Kristie of Norfolk, Nebraska, Jeff Buol of Norfolk, Nebraska and Tachia Buol of Grand Island, Nebraska; Jeremy Hansen and wife Whitney of Burlington and Josh Hansen of Denver. Three great grandchildren, Avery Nicole of Cortland, Nebraska, Zavien Dizon of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Braidon John of Grand Island, Nebraska. Sister-in-laws Dorene Buol of Burlington and E.J. Buol of Sun City, Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Martin was a very loving, caring person with a unique witty personality. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service was held on Monday, November 3, 2008 at the Burlington United Methodist Church in Burlington with Reverend Tom Peacock and the Reverend Terry Buol officiating. Inurnment followed in the Fairview Cemetery, Burlington, Colorado. Visitation was held on Sunday, November 2, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Love Funeral Home in Burlington.
A memorial fund has been established for the United Methodist Church Kids Under Construction to remodel the Educational Building and may be left at the Methodist Church or the Bank of Burlington in Burlington.
