Marvin Ray Becker posted a condolence

Gary and Dennis: I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I never met your father, but after reading about his life I am proud to be a "Marvin Ray." I feel another connection because my father, who died three years ago, was also a great sports fan and in fact he was the 1930 All Colorado State Champion in the half mile run. That was before there were classifications and he beat a boy from South High School in Denver. My wish is that I could have told your Dad I must agree with something I'm sure he always knew. The fact was that Genoa was no doubt the best team at the district tournament in 1959. If you haven't guessed by now, I am Marvin Ray Becker and I was a soph. on the Vona team that won won 61 to 54. Genoa lost just one league game that year while Vona lost four and tied with Flagler. Somehow on March 1, 1959 Vona could do no wrong, or in any case the officials didn't see any wrong. How else could it be that Vona shot twenty-three free throws and Genoa shot but four? Of course Genoa hit all four and you were 2 for 2. Somehow, as a soph. I went to the line for ten times, making just seven. Although Vona won consolation at State, I'll bet Genoa could have won the big trophy. Gary, I've told everyone that you were the best basketball player I ever played against. Duane Lewis from Burlington was very good, but I never played against him in high school. My most vivid memory of you was a left handed sixteen foot jump shot you made on the north end of the gym at Vona. I had never seen anyone shoot a jusp shot with their "off hand." I was left-handed and couldn't have hit a barn shooting right handed. Again, I'm proud to be a "Marvin Ray" and I'm so sorry I couldn't have had a chat with your father.

To all the family of Marv. What a blessing, that so many of us were able to be a part of his life. From the fond memories at the store, to social/church times & school. Later I had the pleasure of playing golf with him when I was down home and would golf with Mom, Dad, and Aunt Marje so many humorous times. Also, at the "Bee Hive" when I visited, there was always the "big" hug and the humor to make us smile and laugh. God has blessed all of us with his life and this will not be forgotten.

Gary, Dennis, Keith and Deb,
We are all so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. All of us knew Marv our whole lives and he made an impression on all of us. My dad really missed him when he was no longer able to come to the Senior Center and play pool. Dad wanted to come to the service but I think it was just too hard on him. Marv was very instumental in shaping me as I worked for him at the school for a couple years when I was in high school.
We all are grieving with you but hope you are taking strength from the fact that your mom and dad both are with the Lord Jesus in heaven.
God Bless!!
With Love,
The Ray Henry Family (Darvon Henry)

I got to know Mr. Hicks at Carla's Cluster. He was usually sitting outside in his wheel chair when I would go to visit my Aunt. He was very kind and friendly and ready to have a chat. I will miss seeing him there.

Marv was a special man. I remember him most from his days in the grocery store in Genoa. The first time I saw him was when he pitched for the Shaw baseball team against the Genoa Townteam. I got to see him play one other time at the "Old Settlers Picnic" at Walks Camp. I enjoyed visiting with him at Carla's Cluster when I would stop by to see mom. Marv will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. All of you are in my prayers.

I just want the family to know how very much I thought of Marvin and Alice. I always enjoyed knowing them during school years but when my folks moved to town and became their neighbors was when I really got to know them best. They were wonderful people and will be sadly missed by many.wdj
