Obituary of William Loss
William Marvin, or Marvin, was born on August 17, 1926, south of Hugo, CO and died at Lincoln Community Hospital in Hugo on November 24th, 2009.
He was the second of five children born to Ernest Loss and Barbara (Thelen) Loss. He was baptized in the Catholic Church and grew up in the Hugo and Limon areas. During the depression, Marvins family moved to Arkansas for a time, and returned to Colorado shortly thereafter. He attended school through the 8th grade and spent time during his childhood with his grandparents, Alfred and Minnie Loss, and his aunts and uncles.
Marvin left school during the 9th grade to take a job shepherding sheep. He worked a number of other jobs until he enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 13, 1944. He completed basic training at Camp Pendleton. Prior to deploying to the Pacific, Marvin marched with his unit in the parade down 5th Avenue in New York City.
Marvin was stationed in Hawaii from July 11, 1945, to August 22, 1946, when he received an honorable discharge. Upon returning to Colorado, Marvin worked in various jobs. He joined some friends in a business venture in the San Francisco area and then returned to Colorado to work as a farm and ranch hand for area land owners. As an employee of the Ted Wall ranch north of Limon, Marvin drove cattle from Mr. Walls ranch to Miles City, Montana. While on this drive, he stopped in Cheyenne, Wyoming. to buy a winter coat at Western Outfitters. At that time, the store was looking for an authentic cowboy for an advertisement and they thought Marvin fit the bill. After his short stint as a western wear print ad model, Marvin finished the drive to Miles CIty. Over the next few years, he worked with his dad learning much about the carpentry trade.
Marvin married Mildred Peterson on September 5, 1961, and they raised a family of three daughters. Marvin worked for heavy construction companies in Colorado to provide for his family in addition to building some homes in the Lincoln county area. The remainder of his life, Marvin lived to leave a cherished legacy of love, generosity, patriotism, loyalty, fairness, a reverent faith, and a true contentment with the everyday joys of life, his family and friends.
Marvin was a member of the Joe Will VFW Post #6612 in Hugo. He attended Holy Cross Lutheran Church and was a past Elks member. Marvin enjoyed playing cards, yatzee, fishing, playing pool and watching a good western movie.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Barbara Loss, his sister and brothers, Dorothy Hubbard, Richard and Robert Loss. He is survived by his brother Lyle Loss of Colorado Springs, his wife Millie, children; Lisa Norris of Colorado Springs, Kristi and Marvin Walker of Lindsborg, KS, Kari and Danny Eisenzimmer of Ft. Pierre, SD, his grandchildren, Christopher Norris, Dylan and Allyson Walker, and Laura Eisenzimmer.
