Obituary of Bessie Card
Longtime Kit Carson County resident, Bessie Mae Card passed away on January 4, 2010 at the Lincoln Community Nursing Home in Hugo. She was 98 years old.
Bessie was born on October 3, 1911 Osage City, Kansas to Charlie J. and Eutella G. (Stouder) Miller. She was one of two children.
In March of 1918, Bessies parents sold their farm in Osage City, and moved to a farm 10 miles south of Vona, Colorado. They lived there for three years, when her parents then bought a farm 7 ½ miles south of Vona. Bessie attended a country school south of Vona, and in 1929, she graduated from Vona High School.
On September 27, 1930, Bessie married George W. Card at the family farm south of Vona. They knew each other for years. They were neighbors as well as classmates. To this union five children were born; four boys and one girl. In her younger years, Bessie attended the Baptist Church. Bessie worked as a homemaker for a good part of her life, she also worked as a cook at the Burlington Elementary School.
Bessie had several hobbies. She enjoyed crocheting, doing oil painting, and gardening and has always enjoyed watching baseball games and the Price is Right.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in 1979, one son Robert Lee Card, her sister Alice Burckholder, two granddaughters Sherry and Sharleen Card and three grandsons, Kenny Stolz, and Wade and Travis Card.
She is survived by three sons Stephen Card and his wife Hazel of Strasburg, Colorado, George Card and his wife Linda also of Strasburg, Colorado, Rudy Card and his wife Opal of Ely, Nevada, and her daughter Melba Stolz and her husband Ken of Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
