Obituary of Susan Dole
Susan Dole, long time resident of Rush Colorado left this life on her birthday 18 April 2016. She was born in Laramie Wyoming 18 April 1958 to Robert and Peggy (Hays) Grimes. She moved to Delta Colorado with her family in 1961. They then lived at Paonia, Elizabeth, and Agate Colorado, Phoenix Arizona (while father raced horses for a winter) and moved to Simla where she attended Big Sandy School from 3rd grade through 12th grade. Susan graduated in May 1976.
While in high school she was a cheerleader and played basketball, volleyball, speedball and was on the track team. Susan was also manager for the boy’s baseball team and on the school newspaper. She also enjoyed going to Limon to bowl and was on youth leagues there. For a time, she went to and competed at Little Britches Rodeos. Her father raced horses and in the summer would race them at the county fairs where Susan would be the jockey for him. She loved riding the race horses and didn’t let the professional jockeys there intimidate her.
When Susan was old enough to join 4-H she did that. Her main projects were livestock though she did try cooking for a while. She loved working with her sheep and horse and taking care of all the other animals on the farm. None of that home stuff for her.
On 29 May 1976 she married Tommy LeRoy Dole of Matheson in Simla Colorado. They made their first home on a farm between Matheson and Limon. While there she worked different jobs in Limon but always yearned for the farm life. To this union was born 1 daughter and 2 sons. Daughter Cassie was born December 1983 while living there.
In 1984 she talked husband Tommy into going into farming, so they moved to the farm in the Rush area where they have made their home since that time. Their 2 sons, Justin and Jeremy were born while living there.
Susan loved working outdoors and working with the farm animals. When a baby calf was born and in distress or not going to make it, she would take it and nurse it back to health. Occasionally she would still lose one and it would really bother her. She didn’t give up on those little ones. She was active as a 4-H leader and supporting her children in all their school activities and sports.
Susan is survived by husband Tommy, daughter Cassie (Lew) Brown of Gunnison, sons Justin of Goodland Kansas and Jeremy of Gunnison. Mother Peggy Grimes of Simla, sister Jackie Holifield of Aurora, brother Jesse Grimes of Yoder, nieces Sunshine Dalton (and her three sons) and Jessie Shockey, and nephews Jonathan Hoover, Bobby and Neal Grimes. She was preceded in death by her father Robert Grimes and 1 niece and 1 nephew.
It was Susan’s wishes to be cremated with no public services at this time.
