Obituary of Donald "Don" Lee Jones
Donald Lee Jones was born on Febuary 21st 1938, North of Seibert, to Harris and Lina Jones. He spent his childhood on the family farm with his siblings Leroy, Erma and Phyllis. He graduated Flagler High School in 1955 at the age of 17. Shortly after graduation, he entered the Navy and was stationed in California. Don was a 2nd class machinist mate, US Navy on the USS John C Butler, a destroyer escort. Don was promoted to 1st class machinist mate and engineer in charge of his division. He was also squad leader of a group of Raiders, what is now called the Elite Force.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Don returned to Flagler where he married Lynda Jean Wimmer. Don worked odd jobs in Flagler until he landed a job with Jim Trahern at the Creamery. In 1963 Don bought the Dairy Business from Jim, got married, and bought a house all in the same year. When Don bought the dairy business he was a distributor for Sealtest and delivered milk all around the area. During this time Don and Lynda started their family, Mark and Paul (1964), Marla (1965), Daren (1967), Gayla (1970), Paula (1974), Carma (1981), Trent (1990). The whole family was actively involved in the milk, ice cream and ice business. After Don retired from the Sinton Dairy after 37 years, retirement couldn’t keep him from working. Don drove the school bus at Flagler School for over 20 years.
Don was actively involved in the community in many different ways, Town Mayor, Town Marshall, he served on the Town Council, he was on the Pioneer Valley Board, Meter Reader for a few years, St Mary’s Catholic Church as a Eucharistic minister and for over 25 years he was the Boy Scout Troop leader.
Don’s greatest joy in life were his 6 kids, 5 in-law kids and 15 grandkids. Don never missed a school program or athletic event for any of his children. Don also loved to travel to be there for his grandkids events as well, basketball or baseball games, dance recitals, birthdays and graduations. And when they couldn’t travel the grandkids love to come and stay for a visit.
Don’s love for the Denver Broncos has spanned over 60 years. Watching football games with dad are memories that all members of the family continue to enjoy today. Don was a craftsman always tinkering in his shed, from cradles and baseball plaques to cabinets and cars. Don would rather build something with his own hands, than buy it brand new.
Don passed away on June 5, 2017 at the Aurora Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He is survived by his wife Lynda of 54 years, daughter Marla & husband Chuck Goeckel children Megan, Matt and Mason of Council Grove, Kansas; son Daren & wife Michelle Jones children Emilee, Makaela, Morgan and Zach of Los Alamos, New Mexico; daughter Gayla Jones of Farquay Verna, North Carolina; daughter Paula & husband Matt Schnell children Allison, Luke, Madison, and Liam of Marlton, New Jersey; daughter Carma & husband James Earl children Kylee, Taylor and Payton of McCook, Nebraska; and son Trent & wife Minda Jones and child Michael of Ft Carson, Colorado; sister Erma Kasza of Colorado Springs, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.
