Obituary of Gladys L. Farnsworth
Gladys Weeden was born at St. Francis, Kansas on January 23, 1914 daughter of Fred and Haidee (Nealley) Weeden. Fred took his little family and moved to St. Joseph, Missouri. Haidee and her 2 children returned and lived with her parents, 2 years later.
Gladys attended all 12 grades at Kanorado and worked one year after graduation for the school superintendent.
She joined and was baptized in the Kanorado Methodist Church and after moving to Burlington she changed her membership to Burlington United Methodist Church.
She married Oscar Farnsworth on July 9, 1932 at Sharon Springs, Kansas. They lived on the farm 4 ½ miles west of Burlington starting out with 2 cows and 4 calves, 4 little pigs and a dozen chickens.
They made it through the 30’s, all the dust storms, losing their 1st baby at 13 months old in May 1935 just before the Republican Flood in June.
In 1938 Bonnie was born and Bill was a new addition in 1941. Nancy came later in 1946, completing the little family.
All these years living in the basement they had built, they were happy to be able to move a house from Kanorado in 1944 and put it on the basement and lived there until May 1989 when they moved to Burlington.
Gladys and Buzz as he was known were avid athletic followers, as the girls were cheerleaders, always takings a load of girls to the games. When Bill got to high school they followed all his games and even through college.
She was canning grand champion at the Kit Carson County Fair for several years. Also 2 years state fair champion.
She was by the side of her husband during his 4 hip surgeries and with God’s help he survived.
After moving to town she could attend church and quilted more regularly. She loved to walk her dog. When weather was bad, she rode her stationary bike and could spend time talking and giving thanks to the Lord, for her blessings.
After saying farewell to her husband in December 2001, she joined the R.S.V.P and has spent many happy hours quilting at the Senior Center. She spent many hours on her bike and enjoyed giving thanks for her blessing.
