Obituary of Gloria Liggett
Gloria Liggett, 85, of Limon, Colorado passed away on January 28, 2017. She was born on November 12, 1931 to Henrietta Faye and Hal Townsend in Pueblo.
Her family farmed in the southern part of Lincoln County during the Dust Bowl where they lived until her brother, Gale Lee, died at the age of two.
Her family then moved to Hugo where she graduated valedictorian in 1949. She attended Colorado College where she majored in English. Before she graduated in 1953, she gave a recital, and a very special person happened to be sitting in the audience. She met Kenneth Liggett after her performance, and they were married September 13, 1953.
It would be too simple to say they moved to Limon and lived happily ever after because she composed an abundantly full life of love, service, and music here on the high plains.
She and Kenneth welcomed a rambunctious baby boy, Michael, who would bring so much joy and excitement to her life, and a beautiful baby girl, Kimberly, who would become her best friend.
Whether it was her family, friends, or community, Gloria always put others before herself. She served as a leader in Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, Flying Farmers, United Methodist Women, El Clavell, the PTA, and was the first woman to serve on Limon’s Town Council.
Gloria believed life was enriched by beautiful music. She gave voice lessons, co-founded the Limon-Woodlin Music Club, directed the Christmas Vespers program, conducted the First United Methodist Church choir for over 30 years, and of course, shared her beautiful voice at countless events and performances.
She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, expertly completing crossword puzzles, and voraciously reading her beloved books. She loved having long conversations about life, politics, literature, and religion around her kitchen table.
Gloria’s life embodied Micah 6:8. She absolutely lived a life of doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.
Gloria was preceded in death by her brother, Gale Lee Townsend; parents, Hal Townsend and Henrietta Faye Townsend; her husband, Kenneth Liggett; and her son, Mike Liggett.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Dave) Taussig of Limon; her daughter-in-law Brenda Liggett of Limon; three grandsons, Michael Liggett of Los Angeles, CA, Tyson (Justine) Liggett of Limon, Gavin Liggett of Limon; four granddaughters, Claire (Michael) Carroll of Denver, Whitney (Travis) Sandersfeld of Limon, Laci Liggett of Limon, and Libby Taussig of Plano, TX; and two great-grandsons Payson Liggett and Myles Liggett of Limon.
