Lifelong Burlington, Colorado resident, Doris Mae Travis, age 83, passed away suddenly in the early morning on Saturday October 18, 2008 at the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington.
Doris was born June 19, 1925 at the country homestead southeast of Bethune, the daughter of Melvin A. and Edna (Biesecker) Gulden. She was one of three children born to this union; she also had two older step siblings. She attended the Prairie Star School south of Bethune and graduated from Bethune High School in 1943. She worked for a short time at the Burlington Locker and then went to work for the Soil Conservation Services.
On September 4, 1954 she was united in marriage to Samuel E. Travis (the boy next door) in Raton, New Mexico. She was a loving wife and endearing mother. Doris enjoyed her flower garden, refinishing woodwork, sewing, reading, and being a room mother for her kids at school. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her family and many friends. Doris was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and was a Girl Scout leader. In their later years, Doris and Sam enjoyed the many trips they took together.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents, and her husband Sam in Feb. 2000. She is also preceded by infant twin daughters, and infant daughter Jana Dea; her sister, Helen Schaal; step-brother Earl Perry and his wife Arlene, step-sister Marie Hasenbalg and her husband Allen.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children; son, Galen Travis, Galen's life-partner, Wanda Merritt of Burlington; daughter, Dena Daniel of Burlington; son, Tracy Travis and wife, T.C. of Wray, CO; and son, Kent Travis of Vona, CO. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Kory Daniel and wife, Heather of Evans, CO and Garrett Travis and Ryan Travis, both of Wray, CO. Also surviving is her sister Ardith Gulden of Burlington, and many nieces and nephews.
She was cared for in her own home this past year and a half very lovingly by her personal caregivers Eva Condrey, Andi Van Meter, Jennie McCasland, and Barb Zimkus.
