Just a good guy! - March 10, 2011
Posted: March 10, 2011 | Last Revised: March 10, 2011
I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Willie's passing. I met Willie as a customer for the Company I was with, and we became friends. He was an honest, hard working good guy that always had a smile and a funny story to share. I will miss him.

Dear Jan, I just learned tonight that Willie has passed away. Willie was a former classmate, we went to Jr. High together in South Gate, CA. I remember the last time I saw him, we walked home from school together (he had been my 8th grade sweetheart) and he told me he was moving to Limon, CO so his parents could manage a bowling alley. I always wondered what had become of him. We reconnected through Classmates about 5 years ago. He told me he had married his high school sweetheart and sent photos of your trip to Hawaii which I took to share at the 30th class reunion of South Gate High School. I just viewed the photo memorial and want to tell you how very beautiful it was and how wonderful it was to see a history of Willie's life in photo. The memorial was a bittersweet discovery, a lovely tribute to Willie who was very clearly a good human being, a solid and loving family man. When I viewed the photos, especially of the two of you, the love between you is so very evident, so evident it was palpable. At the end, the two of you were radiant...how absolutely breathtaking and visible is the love. My heart goes out to you and your family Jan. Thank you for sharing some of Willie's life in that beautiful memorial. May God bless and comfort you and your family. Take care. Cathy Couey

Our deepest sympathies to all of the Layton and Lohmeier families. We were out of state otherwise we sure would have been at Willie's service. It is never easy losing someone you love but at such a young age makes it that much harder. We hope you find peace knowing Willie is in Heaven and probably throwing a few baseballs around and smiling. And maybe just maybe when we all hear the sound of thunder this spring we will all think of Willie realizing he has just bowled another strike. We love all of you so much. Dear Layton and Lohmeier Families, We will all miss Willie tremendously. I consider myself one of the lucky few people to have had a relationship with Willie that transformed from a mentor/coach during my formative years of high school to a life long friendship. It always put just a little larger smile on my face when I would see him when I came home. I will miss that alot but always cherish the many great memories that we created together.

The loss of Willie is a huge loss for the whole community, especially for the boys of this community. How fortunate that Tad & Tanner, had Willie in their lives from t-ball thru high school baseball. Willie was a fixture in their "sports" life. We know he is coaching baseball in heaven, and watching all the games down here, cheering Limon on.

Dear Jan, Eric and Family, I loved the way Willie Smiled. He always had that twinkle in his eye and that little crooked smirk smile. That is what I remember most about your husband and dad. Watching the video tribute one can see that this is visible in pretty much every photo, and it is apparent that he still had that smile till the very end. Working with him at Town Hall for 8 years was always fun. I am sadden that he is not here on earth anymore, but know that he is home with our Father. Peace be with you. Jodi All of the Hilferty's send their prayers to you and your family

Jan and all Willie's family. I was so shocked to hear of Willie's passing. I had been through Limon a couple weeks ago and saw where they had declared a Willie Layton Day. What an honor and how deserving. I know it will be hard to accept his going home to be with his heavenly Father but a plan has been in place for a long time. Just allow all the memories to help you cope. We are all better for knowing him, he was a wonderful person, husband, father, brother and especially friend.
