Dannie Lee Weaver, age 88 passed away Sunday evening May 10, 2009 at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Colorado.
Dannie was born on November 25, 1920 the 4th boy of six sons and one daughter to James and Josephine Weaver in Palmyra, Nebraska.
Dannie was less than a year old when the family moved a few miles east of Arriba, Colorado on the south side of the old highway in 1921. They lived there until approximately 1939 or 1940, when James Weaver had the opportunity to home stead 40 acres six miles east of Burlington and ¼ mile south of what is called Peconic.
Due to the depression Dannie left school after the eighth grade to find work, as did many young people at that time. He joined the ccâs (civilian conservation corps) at the age of 17 stationed in camp scs-3-c Hugo, Colorado. He was honorable discharged in 1939 after serving 18 months, as this was as long as you were allowed to serve. He said many times he would keep only just enough money from his pay check to buy food, the rest was sent home to help support his younger siblings. He then moved back to Burlington and hired out as a farm hand.
On September 28, 1942 Dannie enlisted in the army and was stationed at the 1419th Army Air Force Base Unit where he flew training maneuvers as a co-pilot. Then in 1944 was sent overseas and served in African and European Theater. He was Honorable discharged on February 4, 1946.
Dannie returned home and drove truck hauling the rocks that make up the west face of the dam at Bonny Dam. In 1948 he acquired his private pilotâs license and also started farming again. He rented a large block of land south of town and took over the family ground at Peconic.
He met and married Laurine Schlichenmayer on April 19, 1950 in Streamboat Springs, Colorado. To this union three children were born, Ryan Lee, LaDan Kay, and LaVonne Mae.
He farmed, raised cattle, and fed out feeder pigs until the early 80âs, where he got rid of the livestock part of the business, and decided to concentrate strictly on farming. Of course the flocks of geese and chickens were allowed to remain to make a mess on the concrete in front of the farm shop at Peconic along with the ever present ducks, turkeys, and stray dogs that seemed to show up out of nowhere. Not to mention the grandkids colorful chickens and floppy eared rabbits raised to show at the county fair.
Dannie will forever be remembered for having the first 4 wheel drive tractor used for farming in the area. He was instrumental in starting pinto bean production around Burlington and of course the countless loads of sweet corn that he would give away to anyone that would take it. Along with the potatoes he would donate to hospitals, nursing homes, food banks and any other needy organizations and/or individuals.
He is survived by his son Ryan and wife Linda, daughter LaDan and husband Ray Reents, of Burlington and daughter LaVon Beacom and Kevin Beacom of California. Five grandchildren; LynnAnn and Jadan Weaver, Tyson and Colt Reents and Justina Beacom. Two brothers; Glen Weaver of Burlington and Gordan Weaver of Denver, brother-in-law, Tom Fore of California and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Josephine Weaver, brothers, Don, Harry, and Melvin and sister Laura Jean Fore and two half sisters Pauline Hall and Myrtle Higgins.
